Shopping for Luck at Ongpin

By Anonymous Paul on 27 January, 2014

A quick trip was made to Ongpin Street in Chinatown a couple weekends before Chinese New Year to update some feng shui “ornamentals”; to welcome a more auspicious and favorable year. God knows we all need luck. But after lunch at President, it just turned out to be a big food shopping trip. Fruits at Salazar, incredibly fresh vegetables on the street, hopia and sundry at Ho-Land, hard-to-find spices and gold coin chocolates at Bee Tin Grocery. To top things off, being the Feast of Sto. Niño that day, we encountered a parade of hundreds of images of the Baby Jesus. Christianity and feng shui: ecumenicalism at its best. All this happening in 3 hours within about 2 or 3 blocks. Good times.
