On the Cheap: The Twinkie Virgin

Hi, my name is Sanju and I am a Twinkie virgin. Well, no longer as I was finally able to try this iconic confection recently. I actually had two chances within the past few months. Initially, I was gifted one by Richard of talesfromthetummy.com. However, my kids ate the aforementioned Twinkie before I had the chance to, thinking that it was for them. Curses, foiled again. Recently though, C was able to purchase a box from one her “suki” Facebook purveyors and this time I was not to be denied.
Growing up, I would always see Twinkie advertisements at the back of my favorite Archie Comics. Unfortunately, there were none available locally. My parents were just starting out and could not afford to take us kids to the U.S., making it virtually impossible for my curiosity to be satisfied. Later on, when my parents finally took us on our first trip, the thought of actually trying the Twinkie faded by the wayside, overtaken by more interesting things. It was only recently when Hostess, its manufacturer, decided to pull it out of the market permanently, was the Twinkie back in my consciousness. I had always wondered what it would taste like and I thought that would probably will never have a chance. After a few months, Hostess had a change of heart and now, decades into my life, I finally tasted the Twinkie.
My thoughts: I actually did not like it. I found both the sponge cake and creamy center too sweet and it had this underlying preservative taste that lingered. But I do understand how one can actually love it especially when nostalgia is involved. I would probably, nay definitely feel the same way if it was one of those sweets that I had growing up. However since this is not the case for me, I will leave it to those who did. Through it all, I am still thankful that I was able to try it after all these years. Now I can finally say that my name is Sanju and I am no longer a Twinkie virgin.

I found the Twinkies too sweet also. I preferred the Ding Dong.

That's funny Sanj. I've been here 26 years and no twinkies for me as of yet.
